Diversity Efforts:
has a Minorities and Philosophy (MAP) chapter or similar diversity group
hosts invited speakers who are members of underrepresented groups at least annually
has hosted an event focused on diversity and inclusion within the past year
provides annual sexual harassment, bystander, and climate training (directly or through our institution)
ensures department events are accessible to participants with disabilities
provides accommodations for faculty and guest speakers with disabilities
provides accommodations for students, faculty, and others with disabilities (directly or through our institution)
educates faculty and staff about disability accommodations and how to obtain them (directly or through our institution)
Additional efforts to increase inclusiveness:
Our department is strongly committed to increasing the representation in the profession of women and other currently underrepresented groups. In addition to simply striving to remain cognizant at every step (attracting and supporting majors, admitting and retaining doctoral students, hiring and retaining faculty, etc.) of the relative importance of inclusiveness for the health not only of our department, but of the discipline itself, we are also home to SURG--the Society for Under-Represented Groups. SURG is a student-run and student-initiated organization in the Department of Philosophy specifically devoted to supporting and increasing the presence of women, LGBTQ, and minority students in the department and in philosophy in general. Indeed, with the financial support of the Department of Philosophy, the group selects and invites a scholar to campus to present the Annual SURG Public Lecture and also to lead a more practically-themed Annual SURG Workshop with graduate and undergraduate participants.
