Other Financial Information:
The department offers all incoming students a five year package of support in the form of fellowships and Assistant Instructorships, provided that they continue to make satisfactory progress toward the degree. Internal fellowships and associate instructorship packages come with full fee scholarships, which pay for tuition, as well as health insurance, both medical and dental. Certain nonremittable fees are not covered.
In addition, thanks to a generous endowment to the Department from the late James B. Nelson, all Ph.D. students are awarded a special third-year summer fellowship. Some travel funds are available to graduate students to help defray the costs of attending important national and international conferences in philosophy.

Program Strengths:
Currently, the department's research profile is well balanced across all major areas of philosophical inquiry, with a few areas of notable strength: Metaphysics and Epistemology, Philosophy of Mind and Action, Logic and Language, Kant, Hume, History of Analytic Philosophy (esp. Frege, Russell, Carnap, Quine, Davidson, early and middle Wittgenstein), Value Theory, Philosophy of Law, Philosophy of Religion. Given the added resources of the University's Pure and Applied Logic Program, large and acclaimed Cognitive Sciences Program, the Department of the History and Philosophy of Science, and a few philosophers based in other departments, prospective students of philosophy have an exceptionally diverse array of study options and a lively and friendly intellectual community in which to develop.
