All graduate students admitted are given a scholarship and a teaching assistantship. Numbers vary by year. Two PhD students a year are given the opportunity to teach their own classes in the Department, and many find solo teaching experience at one of the many neighbouring universities and colleges. Many graduate students win federally or provincially funded scholarships.

Program Strengths

We have particuar strength in philosophy of law and the history of analytical philosophy (the Russell Archives are housed at McMaster,and we have the Bertrand Russell Research Centre). We have broad strength in moral, political and legal philosophy, and are members of the Ontario Legal Philosophy Partnership,with partners Osgoode Hall Law School and York University's Philosophy Department. We have faculty members who draw from both the analytic and continental philosophical traditions. We have a history of collaboration with the Universities of Guelph and Wilfrid Laurier where our grad students can take courses without additional payment. Grad students may enrol in two associated diplma programs: Gender Studies and Feminist Research, and Water Without Borders (offered through the United Nations University in Hamilton).
