Diversity Efforts:
has hosted an APA CSW Site Visit
has a climate or diversity committee
has conducted a departmental climate survey within the past three years
hosts invited speakers who are members of underrepresented groups at least annually
has hosted an event focused on diversity and inclusion within the past year
provides annual sexual harassment, bystander, and climate training (directly or through our institution)
ensures department events are accessible to participants with disabilities
provides accommodations for faculty and guest speakers with disabilities
provides accommodations for students, faculty, and others with disabilities (directly or through our institution)
has implemented measures to combat implicit bias in the evaluation of students and faculty
Additional efforts to increase inclusiveness:
We have succeeded at increasing the diversity of both our graduate students and our faculty over the past few years, and we continue to strive to make further improvements. We continue to work with the Florida Education Fund (McKnight Program) to attract minority applicants to our program. We are committed to sustaining an inclusive and collegial atmosphere. We invited the Site Visit Program of the APA Committee on the Status of Women to our department in March 2014, and we are working to implement the recommendations of their very helpful report. In 2016 we hosted the first annual Inclusiveness Conference, addressing issues relating to gender and disability. The speakers for the 2017 conference will focus on issues of race and gender. The College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Miami has recently instituted a paid parental leave program for graduate students, and a program to reimburse child travel and childcare expenses for junior faculty attending conferences.

Program Strengths:
The M.A. program is designed for those who want to pursue philosophy at a deeper level than in their B.A. degree, or who wish to transition into philosophy from other academic disciplines. Students may choose this program to improve their chances of acceptance into a highly-ranked Ph.D. program, or for other reasons. There are no distribution requirements: students may tailor their coursework to their own interests. Students must also write and defend a thesis, which can be used as a writing sample for Ph.D. program applications.
Program Strengths:
The department’s areas of specialization are in epistemology, metaphysics, philosophy of mind, ethics, philosophy of language, philosophy of science, virtue theory, philosophy of art, pragmatism, and philosophy of logic. We are dedicated to offering graduate students close personal attention and professional mentoring, along with rigorous philosophical training. About 25 students are currently enrolled in the program, a relatively small size that facilitates contact between the students and the faculty and ensures that graduate students are an integral part of department life.
