Diversity Efforts:
ensures department events are accessible to participants with disabilities
provides accommodations for faculty and guest speakers with disabilities
provides accommodations for students, faculty, and others with disabilities (directly or through our institution)
offers multiple courses in which philosophers from underrepresented groups are included on the syllabus in proportion to their numbers in the profession and/or which focus on philosophical issues related to race, gender, disability, class, etc.
Additional efforts to increase inclusiveness:
We stand apart from other departments offering an M.A. in Philosophy because we are uniquely situated in the Borderland region of the United States and many of our students, faculty, and staff are bilingual, speaking and writing in both English and Spanish. Nearly 75% of our graduate students are Hispanic and about 40% are women. We are very proud of our diverse faculty and students, believing that this is what sets us apart from other universities and philosophy departments around the nation.
Additional Information:
We aim to provide our students with an excellent, comprehensive, and balanced education in philosophy that provides them with the knowledge and critical skills to think expansively and carefully about, not only the perennial philosophical topics, but also the major personal and social questions of our time. In addition, as a department located on the U.S.-Mexico border, we have a specific purpose to promote more diversity within the profession of philosophy. The under-representation of Latinos and Latinas in philosophy is a serious problem, and our department has had tremendous success in addressing the imbalance.
Our faculty has mentored students who have won scholarly awards, presented their research at professional conferences and are succeeding in a variety of careers. Many of our graduate students have gone on to excel in top PhD programs throughout the country or in diverse careers and areas of expertise.
