Additional efforts to increase inclusiveness

History and Philosophy of Science at Indiana University is a small department, without standing committees or formal infrastructure for diversity or minority recruiting and retention. For recruiting we rely heavily on diversity-building awards like the McNair or the AGEP or internal IU fellowships, and we have had several awardees in our program in recent years. For mentoring and skill development, we take advantage of our small size. Students—not only minorities—have close personal contacts with all the faculty and find support and encouragement in addition to expertise in their special areas of interest. It should be noted that we do not compile statistics on sexual orientation. The absence of LGBT data in this report does not indicate lack of inclusiveness.
