Diversity Efforts:
has a climate or diversity committee
has a Minorities and Philosophy (MAP) chapter or similar diversity group
has conducted a departmental climate survey within the past three years
hosts invited speakers who are members of underrepresented groups at least annually
has hosted an event focused on diversity and inclusion within the past year
provides annual sexual harassment, bystander, and climate training (directly or through our institution)
ensures department events are accessible to participants with disabilities
provides accommodations for faculty and guest speakers with disabilities
provides accommodations for students, faculty, and others with disabilities (directly or through our institution)
educates faculty and staff about disability accommodations and how to obtain them (directly or through our institution)
Additional efforts to increase inclusiveness:
The UW Department of Philosophy works throughout the year to recruit top scholars to our graduate program, and our faculty is committed to making our program attractive to traditionally underrepresented candidates (we understand this category to include women, underrepresented minority students, LGBTQ students, students with disabilities, and first-generation students). We use the National Name Exchange, have an active departmental 'Climate' committee (which addresses diversity issues), have Implicit Bias training for all incoming graduate students, and work closely with the UW Office of Grad Student Equity and Excellence (GSEE) to secure scholarships for incoming students of color. In an effort to create a cooperative, rather than a competitive learning environment, we offer all incoming students five years of guaranteed funding (given satisfactory progress).
