Diversity Efforts:
has a climate or diversity committee
has a Minorities and Philosophy (MAP) chapter or similar diversity group
hosts invited speakers who are members of underrepresented groups at least annually
provides annual sexual harassment, bystander, and climate training (directly or through our institution)
ensures department events are accessible to participants with disabilities
provides accommodations for faculty and guest speakers with disabilities
provides accommodations for students, faculty, and others with disabilities (directly or through our institution)
educates faculty and staff about disability accommodations and how to obtain them (directly or through our institution)
offers multiple courses in which philosophers from underrepresented groups are included on the syllabus in proportion to their numbers in the profession and/or which focus on philosophical issues related to race, gender, disability, class, etc.
has a mentoring program for junior faculty and/or graduate students that addresses issues of diversity and inclusion
Additional efforts to increase inclusiveness:
We aim at recruiting a diverse faculty and we attract a diverse group of graduate students who align with the rich array of California and world cultures. In addition to courses on the history of philosophy and on contemporary issues in the central philosophical fields, we offer courses on philosophy in practice - for example in philosophy of law, human rights, medical ethics, environmental ethics, cognitive science, philosophy of science and mathematics, and the ethics of emerging technologies and AI. Students can study with faculty who are expert in early modern philosophy and Kant, Chinese philosophy, Islamic philosophy, feminist philosophy, and early modern women philosophers. We have also been very successful in encouraging and supporting our students in winning competitive scholarships aimed at helping member of underrepresented groups, e.g., the Sally Casanova Pre-Doctoral Scholarship, and SFSU Provost's Scholar Award.
Additional Information:
Our students are able to draw on several sources of funding including State University Grants (which cover most of the cost of tuition for qualified in-state residents), the Provost Scholar Award (which reduces tuition costs for out-of-state students to in-state levels), and the Sally Casanova Scholarships (which are awarded to students from underserved populations to facilitate admissions to PhD programs and include summer internships and funding for travel and application preparation). Teaching Assistantships for credit or remuneration, as well as paid teaching positions are also available. Finally, students are able to take advantage of the resources afforded by studying philosophy in the Bay Area including participating in local workshops, attending talks, and taking courses through the San Francisco Consortium Program or the Cross Registration Program with UC Berkeley.

Other Financial Information:
In addition to the State University Grants and campus fellowships mentioned above, our department offers three types of scholarships annually: (1) Philosophy Graduate Student Tuition Scholarship, which is awarded to four incoming or first-semester graduate students; (2) Jason Zarri Scholarship, which is awarded to one student who works on ethics, metaphysics, logic and/or philosophy of religion, and (3) Silvers 50th Endowed Scholarship Award in Philosophy. Another significant draw of our department is our Graduate Teaching Associate (GTA) program – in which qualified graduate students are paid to teach their own undergraduate philosophy courses. Apartments and single rooms in university housing will be available for graduate students entering Fall '16. As space is limited, students who wish to be eligible to apply when applications for university housing open should submit their Philosophy M.A. applications as early as possible and be sure all needed transcripts have been sent. See our website for more details: http://philosophy.sfsu.edu/page/graduate-program-financial-assistance .

Program Strengths:
SF State's M.A. program in Philosophy has a special mission to provide greater academic opportunities to students who would normally lack the means to acquire them. In addition to a rigorous, graduate-level curriculum, our program is also designed to help students who attended lesser-known undergraduate institutions or received their undergraduate degrees in a discipline other than philosophy. We also stand out for the breadth and diversity of both our faculty and our research strengths. Scholars with national and international reputations teach and mentor in areas such as Philosophy of Science, Philosophy of Mathematics, Feminist Philosophy, Applied Ethics, Political Philosophy, Modern Philosophy, Islamic Philosophy, Chinese Philosophy, Philosophy of Mind, Metaphysics, Ancient Philosophy, and Philosophy of Law.
