has adopted a graduate program diversity statement
hosts invited speakers who are members of underrepresented groups at least annually
has hosted an event focused on diversity and inclusion within the past year
provides annual sexual harassment, bystander, and climate training (directly or through our institution)
ensures department events are accessible to participants with disabilities

provides accommodations for students, faculty, and others with disabilities (directly or through our institution)
educates faculty and staff about disability accommodations and how to obtain them (directly or through our institution)
offers multiple courses in which philosophers from underrepresented groups are included on the syllabus in proportion to their numbers in the profession and/or which focus on philosophical issues related to race, gender, disability, class, etc.
Additional efforts to increase inclusiveness:
The Philosophy Department aims to create an environment in which all students feel comfortable fully participating, sharing their perspectives, and engaging with our academic community. It is our responsibility to be a welcoming and inclusive department. Our specific commitments include: 1) Careful and special consideration of diversity in our hiring, admissions, and recruitment. In addition to demographic diversity, we expect faculty/staff to help contribute to diversity through teaching and other initiatives. We will strive to improve recruitment and retention of majors/minors as well as graduate students from historically underrepresented backgrounds. 2) Revising and expanding our curriculum so as to better speak to a diverse student body. This includes revisiting syllabuses for diversity (e.g., in authorship of assigned texts). We also will continue to address issues of diversity and inclusiveness in our course offerings on justice, race and gender, and speech, power and politics. 3) The gathering of demographic data on majors/minors and graduate student applicants. This will be used to mark progress and discover areas for growth. 4) Creating office, work, and classroom spaces that are not only non-threatening, but positively welcoming, for the diverse student body that we desire to reach.
Additional Information:
We are a particularly good choice for students looking to improve their philosophical training before applying to PhD programs. Our program is somewhat distinctive in that we offer a terminal M.A. in addition to our PhD program (which itself requires an M.A. for admission). We are a very well rounded department for our size. For example, we have faculty who are research active in philosophy of mind and psychology, epistemology, metaphysics, the history of philosophy (especially Ancient, Early Modern, and Wittgenstein), philosophy of science, philosophy of language, philosophy of religion, and ethics, among other areas.
